BRAINTREE TOWN 1 DOVER ATHLETIC 3

Whites win after heroic performance.

It was a first half of missed chances for the hosts, with Dover taking theirs as the sides played out an entertaining opening 45 minutes.

A terrible mistake from Will Mosses let in the Iron’s forward who rounded Nelson, only to strike it against the foot of the post.

Moments later and Braintree were in again with the Dover defence unable to clear and with Nelson being closed down and dispossessed on the edge of his penalty area, the hosts could only fire agonisingly wide.

The onslaught continued with Braintree again coming close in the 8th minute with Aaron Blair firing agonisingly over.

After the initial blitz, Dover started to grow into the game and in the 25th minute took the lead through some neat build up play resulting in Luke Wanadio gliding towards the edge of the box and firing into the far bottom corner. It was an absolute stunner.

Lee Martin could have doubled the Whites lead but a fine save from Jack Sims kept the hosts down to a 0-1 score line which proved pivotal moments later as the goal scorer for the Whites was caught on his heels trying to clear his lines in the right back position only for the ball to fall to Alfie Matthews who fired the hosts level. It was a fantastic equaliser just before the break.

While it was all square at half-time, Braintree had enough chances to be in front.

Both sides enjoyed neat spells of possession In the early periods of the second half with first Wanadio firing across the hosts goal, but there was no one to capitalise for the visitors.

Baris Altintop should have put the Iron in front in the 63rd minute when a free-kick in the penalty area dropped to the skipper, who fired over the crossbar from six yards out.

Moments later and the impressive Blair, weaved his way into the Dover box, but his curling shot was inches wide.

In the 73rd minute, Dover took the lead. A neat build up between Wanadio and Boateng resulted in the former lashing a shot at Sims who parried out for Brandon Pierrick to lash into the net. The travelling Whites were sent wild.

With ten minutes remaining, it was penalty box fury as Dover battled to clear their lines with first Boateng throwing his body to save a goal and then hooking off the line. From the resulting corner, Higgs headed away as a Braintree player looked to nod home.

Nelson then punched the next corner clear to ensure the barrage was seen off. It was real backs to the wall defending.

It was one fine block after another as with the referee signalling five minutes of added time, Jordan Higgs cleared the ball off the line in heroic fashion.

Braintree thought they had an equaliser but the linesman ruled out the equaliser in the 94th minute. Seconds later and Dover had a penalty. Pierrick was clumsily fouled in the box and Wanadio despatched at the second attempt. 3-1 and a job done.

It was a fantastic defensive display. Get in!

RED RUINS WHITES – MANAGERS REACTION

The Gaffer reflects on the Whites latest outing.

The Whites fell to a 1-0 defeat on Non League Day, away to St Albans City following an early red card that all but killed the game as a contest in the opening 20 minutes. Tyrone Sterling was deemed the last man when he clipped Chay Cooper who was bearing down on goal and in the 17th minute, already a goal behind, we had it all to do for the next 70 odd minutes. The loss was later compounded by the second booking to Myles Judd as the Whites chased the game.

It was a battling performance from the ten men who fought bravely against a play off chasing St Albans team. It wasn’t the result we wanted but it was a more spirited effort than the defeat last week to Hampton & Richmond.

‘It took for someone to get sent off for us to really kick into gear,’ said Brundle after the match. ‘It’s the fine margins at the moment that don’t seem to be going our way. For 70 minutes I have to give credit to the lads for digging in and even though they had a few chances, we had a couple of our own but these little things are not going our way. You can’t let yourself go away from what you are. We haven’t turned into a bad team over four games but maybe a little bit of luck isn’t going our way but we can change that. We will make sure we have another strong week of training.

These are a very good side, let’s not take that away from them. I was here on Tuesday to watch them against Cheshunt. They were far better today than then and Nelson has made some fantastic saves. We were a little wasteful in the final third which we know has been a theme all season but we just need to grind out a couple of results and look to build on that.’

With Sterling and Judd facing suspensions for the upcoming fixtures, there is a chance for others to stake a claim in the team, most notably Andi Janjeva who replaced Jake Goodman at half-time. Goodman’s injury will be assessed but the early signs are that it could be a couple of games but the Gaffer is sure that Janjeva can step in if required.

‘He done well when he came on, he did the basics and what we asked of him to do. We also have two players back from suspension in Lee Martin and Jordan Higgs. Two big players for us who have been missed in the last two games. They make a massive difference to this team, a bigger difference than they probably don’t get the credit for. That is the heart of where most games are won and lost at this level. We have lacked that little bit over the last two games and the people who have come in have failed to take their chance.

We will look back at the video of the game and decide if we are to appeal against any of the red cards. Most of the people here and even their manager was agreeing but these are the things just not going our way. It’s a tough place to play with eleven this season so to play with ten when we are down to the bare bones, fair play to them. We said at half-time if we could keep them out and get a set piece, we had a chance and the one at the end, Baptiste header, he just got blocked off.

Listen, it’s not all doom and gloom in the camp, there’s a lot of games and points still left on the table. And by the way, the crowd. Absolutely phenomenal. They travelled in their numbers today and I know managers say this all the time but I really mean it, they have been excellent and I can’t thank them enough. Hopefully the tide turns and they can carry on getting behind us like they did when we went six unbeaten. I know they are frustrated but so is everyone and we can only get through this if we are together as a team.’

NO HEART FOR HAMPTON

The boss gives his honest assessment on Saturday’s defeat to Hampton & Richmond Borough.

The Whites looked out of sorts during their latest outing against Hampton & Richmond Borough with a 3-0 home defeat, their second in as many games. From keeping four consecutive clean sheets just a couple of weeks ago, Mitch Brundle’s side have now conceded nine goals in three matches.

Speaking to Kent Online Sport Brundle said ‘It was a gutless performance. It’s just not good enough and not accepted. We’ve gone from four successive clean sheets to conceding nine goals against three teams below us, fighting for their lives. We just didn’t have enough character. It was just a gutless performance. I’m upset for the fans, as well, because we were getting a little gathering back together with our consistency and working hard. But we didn’t work hard enough today – and I won’t accept that. Even when I first got the job, I said I’ll never have a team that doesn’t run around – and they didn’t today. They let themselves down. We were missing two key experienced players, which is not an excuse.

You’re just asking the other players to work hard, have that desire and commitment, track runners, and we started the second half a little bit better, changing shape. But we conceded sloppy goals. There was no desire and no pride in their own performance. They have to take that on themselves. Some players do take a little bit, the more consistent ones, but it’s not acceptable from everyone else. We’ll just go back to the drawing board and, hopefully, not have it again.’

Skipper Lee Martin and fellow midfielder Jordan Higgs were both missing from the game following an accumulation of cards that meant both players served a suspension which includes this weeks fixture against St Albans. Fans took to social media and many in the bar after the game we asking why the Gaffer had not included himself in the line-up with limited options in the heart of the midfield.

‘Yeah, maybe now, I maybe didn’t need to play myself at the start [of his time in charge]’, said the boss. ‘But it’s coming to the crunch time for that. Do I think I’m the answer? I don’t know. What I didn’t want to do – and what I think is right – is, if I play myself ahead of someone, basically, I’m telling them they can walk out the door. They’re not good enough. The six games unbeaten wasn’t down to any quality or the ball-side of the game. It was down to heart, desire and commitment. But we didn’t have that and we haven’t had that for the last three games. We can see that on the statistics and they can see it. This is just a tough game to take because it’s not really about quality.’

The Whites head to St Albans this weekend, looking to get back to winning ways.

BATH BORES BRUNDLE AS NELSON LEAPS TO THE GAFFERS DEFENCE

Dover Athletic 0 Bath City 0

It was another point on the board and another clean sheet this week as the Whites again failed to find the net for the second time in a month. Bath City were a very organised team but were clearly there for the taking with Mitch Brundle’s team riding high following Tuesday nights victory over Havant.

Boss Brundle had told the players that he was ‘bored’, during his half-time team talk. Speaking to Kent Online Sport post match, Brundle said ‘I think we had the better of the chances. But it wasn’t a game for the neutral! I said to them at half-time that it’s the most bored I’ve been, stood on the side line as a manager. That didn’t excite me one bit but it’s six unbeaten. It’s still positive, don’t get me wrong, and it shows where we have come to that we are disappointed to draw 0-0 with Bath and earn our fourth clean sheet in a row. It was just one of those days. I’ve just looked at the results and a lot of teams drew today. We weren’t at the races. It’s the worst we’ve performed. I could be critical with aspects of certain bits but the keeper has tipped one onto the bar and we’ve had chances in the first half, and Noah Carney should score. But to be fair, it didn’t look like we were ever going to score. But they didn’t look like ever scoring, either.”

It’s another clean sheet which is now four on the spin for the club and credit is due to both the backline and the goalkeeper. ‘Four clean sheets, as well, and it’s four years since the club last did that. ‘That’s where we’ve come as a club,’ noted Brundle. ‘That’s where we have changed now. I’d have snapped your hand off for that when I first got the job. But I will always try and be better and, to be fair, that’s why I’m so – I wouldn’t say disappointed – more frustrated. We created enough chances to score and win the game. It is what it is. I’ve not really got the words to try and describe how I’m feeling. I could just be critical, and I’m allowed to be, but we’d have snapped peoples’ hands off a few weeks ago to be six unbeaten and we are now. We’re going in the right direction and I think it’s a positive the fact that I can stand here as the manager and be frustrated that we haven’t won the game, and we’ve drawn against a good team.

There was a minute’s applause before kick-off in tribute to long-serving Dover fan Bob Hill, who recently died. Brundle himself acknowledged that fact and was quick to ensure that the family were given the clubs condolences. ‘I’d just like to send my condolences to Bob Hill’s family,’ said Brundle. It’s sad that he’s lost his life and we respected him today with a round of applause. As you could see, it meant a lot to a lot of people here. He’s been a fan for plenty of years. We just wish their whole family well and hope they’re all doing okay, and that’s from everyone – from top to bottom – at this football club.’

Stuart Nelson, part of the reason the Whites haven’t conceded in the last four matches, was keen to point out to Kent Online Sport that it was a team effort. ‘It’s Dover’s clean sheet,’ said Nelson. ‘Obviously, I’m in goal so clean sheets mean as much to me as goals mean to strikers, so I’ll take every single one of them. That’s 11 for me for the season so I’m happy with it from a personal perspective. But ultimately, I can’t do it without the 10 other players who are on the pitch with me at that time. In the last four and quite a bit games since conceding the boys have been excellent on the defensive side of things.’

Our number one came to the defence of his manger who’s age had been raised in the discussion. ‘The age thing – that’s your issue, not mine for starters. Everyone wants to say about age but age doesn’t mean anything to me. It’s a number. We’re keeping clean sheets and that’s down to how he’s setting us up. I don’t care whether he’s 12 or 102, it doesn’t mean anything to me. Age is really irrelevant and it does bug me, which is why I’ve reacted like this. I think Mitch has come in and done a really fantastic job, and the results have shown that. ‘Soon, someone is going to get thumped. That’s the bottom line. If we keep defending the way we’re doing it, then someone is going to come on a good run of goals from us.’

The Whites face Cheshunt tomorrow evening who are on a decent run of form themselves with only two defeats coming in their last nine matches. Dover will be looking to avenge the 2-0 defeat back in December but there is a completely different dynamic to the squad now compared to a couple of months ago.

We hope to see you all there. We understand that there has been a run of home games lately but we completely appreciate your continued support.

HAVANT A GOOD TIME

The Vanarama National South Manager of the Week reflects on a job well done.

It was another cracking performance from the Whites on Tuesday night as Havant & Waterlooville were the next team to fall by the new look Dover Athletic sword. 11 points from 15 and three successive clean sheets show that this group is certainly buying into the managers philosophy.

Our Gaffer was even named the Vanarama National South Manager of the Week after back to back 1-0 wins and clean sheets which prompted for Mitch Brundle to be given the award.

Speaking to Kent Online Sport, Brundle said ‘It’s been good,’ Brundle admitted after the Taunton game. ‘We are four unbeaten and could have won a couple more. We have changed personnel. Everything I have asked of the boys, they have done. You always come up short in certain games but, when they’re doing what we’re asking, you can accept it.’

The manager also heaped praise on his latest signing, Brandon Pierrick. ‘He hasn’t played a lot of football as of late. He got tired towards the end. But he brings something different to our armoury, he has electric pace. He’s so good in one versus one areas. He has fantastic ability – it’s now time for him to use that ability. He started at the top and wants to get back there. That’s what sort of player we are after. They can drop down the leagues but he’s humble.

Brandon’s a humble person, a nice person, and a good character. That’s what we want. He can be a huge player for us. He’s got something we have not got, which is raw pace. He lasted longer than I thought he would do. He has got everything to go back to where he was before. He’s a little gem.’

Luke Wanadio has had a mixed time of late. Placed on the transfer list with seemingly no future at the club but that hasn’t stopped Dover’s number 10 from knuckling down and doing the business on the pitch. Wanadio scored the only goal in the 1-0 win over the Hawks and was delighted with his contribution.

‘Obviously no one likes being transfer listed but I have to stay professional and now I am back in the team and we are playing well which is fantastic,’ said Wanadio. ‘I’m in good spirits and i’m very happy with how things are going at the moment and I think thats showing in my performances. I’m leaving everything out there and trying to work harder to help the team as much as i can whether that is scoring or assisting.’

Keep up the good work, Luke.

A JOB WELL DONE – FROM TAUNTON TO HAVANT

The Whites returned back to White Cliffs country with the points but attention already turns to Havant.

It was a hard fought victory on Saturday with the only goal coming from a neat Jordan Higgs finish, following some good build-up play by both Brandon Pierrick and George Nikaj. The gaffer was delighted with the win and getting back on the bus with three points after travelling all morning was well worth the journey.

‘It was fantastic,’ said Brundle. ‘From start to finish, we could of won by more but thats been our downfall all season. I couldn’t of asked for more. It was a perfect performance, coming away from home, 1-0 win, long journey. I’m delighted for the boys who put the hard work in. The players were dead on their feet after the game with the effort that they put in. They worked so hard. It’s 8 points from 12 now which puts us in good stead and now we focus on the next game.

Two clean sheets in a row, the back for and goalkeeper have been fantastic. They defended like proper men today. Taunton put some great deliveries into our box but again Jake Goodman, who only missed one header all day, was superb. We played against a team who have the second best defensive record in the league so to get two clean sheets in a row shows how far we have come in a short space of time.

We move on to the next game now on Tuesday and we take a lot of confidence from the performance. Freddie Oliver has come in on his debut and was outstanding. It couldn’t have gone any better for him and now the task for him is to keep that level of performance. We know he wont be able to play like that every week as he’s only young but he read the game so well on Saturday and he’s given himself a chance and put himself in our plans for the remainder of the season.

There is a real togetherness in the squad at the moment but its not just the players, it’s the backroom staff as well. There is a little buzz about the place and we are delighted with the recent attitude of everyone.

Just want to say thank you to all the traveling fans on Saturday. Unbelievable commitment to travel and support us in number and it certainly got us over the line, helping us get 3 points. The players appreciate it so thank you.’

Debutant Freddie Oliver had brought plaudits from both the fans and his boss after a cracking performance in the heart of the Whites midfield. The youngster looked like he had over 100 appearances under his belt rather than just making his first.

‘First game today. I was a little nervous before it started but as the game went on I got into it and now I am buzzing after the game. Coming away from home, tough pitch and a long coach journey, it was always going to be a tough match but we got the three points which is the main thing. We done the business. Thank you to the supporters for their support Saturday. To hear the noise they were making throughout the game helped me and filled me with confidence.’

The Whites have a quick turnaround with Havant & Waterlooville heading back to Kent for our rearranged fixture tomorrow night.

BLANKETY BLANK – WHITES FAIL TO FIND THE NET

The manager’s reaction following the stalemate with Chelmsford City.

It might have been another point on the board for the Whites this weekend but it wasn’t enough for the boss who was slightly disappointed. Chelmsford are a well drilled side who are in touching distance of the play off picture themselves but Mitch Brundle thought his team could have taken more than just the solitary point. It’s a work in progress still and a sign that things are most definitely on the up at the Megger Community Stadium.

Speaking to Kent Online Sport Brundle said ‘I didn’t think we played particularly well, I’m a little bit disappointed but that shows you where we’ve come from, unbeaten in three and five points from the last nine. They’re higher than us. You can be critical but to be fair the boys did everything in terms of their work-rate, commitment and desire that we look for. I’m quite pleased but I also feel like it was a missed opportunity. It’s a bit frustrating because we did well in spells, I thought we deserved to win the game. Credit to them, they are resilient as a team but we were as well. A couple of months ago we might have lost that game with the chances late on. I thought defensively, especially the two centre-halves, were excellent. We huffed and puffed and lacked that real clinical edge.

Josh Ajayi had opened his account last week but couldn’t add to it after some fine goalkeeping by the opposition stopper. ‘You score that one, you like to hope you kick on,’ said the gaffer. ‘We put ourselves in good areas but we just weren’t clinical enough. We’re creating chances but it comes down to the saying “if you don’t finish your dinner, you’re going to be hungry.” We can’t be critical of the team. They didn’t out-work us, it was a good battle between two good teams. We want to be in their position so go out and prove it. If we can keep the run going then we’ll keep moving forward.’

Brundle declared on the ‘Meet the Manager’ evening that he wanted his team to play a certain style. The players have clearly brought into the new philosophy even if the results haven’t always gone our way. ‘Consistency has been our big problem, today it wasn’t so that’s credit to the dressing room,’ Brundle continued. ‘It can’t just be two games, it needs to be three and then four and five. At the minute we’re not at that stage, we’re still developing and building and still trying to get as many points on the board as we can.’

The Whites travel to Taunton on Saturday this week to face Taunton Town, looking to extend the unbeaten run to four matches. We hope to see you there.

THREE POINTS, TWO GOALS, ONE STEP FORWARD

We hear from the men who made Dover’s victory over Eastbourne Borough possible.

Despite an early setback with the Whites conceding inside two minutes, it was a spirited performance and the first reversal since pre covid. It’s a statistic that has stretched on for far too long but not only was it a first win in six but also showed character to come from behind.

Speaking to Kent Online Sport, manager Mitch Brundle said ‘Like I said when I first took the job, it’s a work in progress. The players have got to trust the process, and they have. Today, we have scored two goals, which I’m delighted with. I’m glad to see Josh get off the mark. I’m hoping now that gives him a bit of confidence. The team did everything I asked of them, with their desire, their commitment, their work ethic and their respect for each other to do each others’ jobs. It’s something we’ve had in all our performances, to be fair, since we’ve actually been able to bring players in and shake the squad up how we want it to be.

I think that’s two draws, a win and a loss since we brought players in, which is fantastic. We were missing goals but, today, we got them. The actual work ethic of the team is the thing that makes me the most proud because they’re running for me and they’re running for the club. You could see the celebrations after the game and that just comes from hard work. I said that at half-time. I said “You didn’t drop your heads, you didn’t think the world was against you, you didn’t sulk. You dug in and made sure that you turned the result around.” They believe in what we’re trying to do.

Second minute, the goal went in and I was thinking “Oh God, here we go”. But fair play to them, all credit to them, and their hard work pays off. We just move onto the next one now. I thought Lee Martin was outstanding. Pax (Jack Paxman) joins in with the front lads unbelievably well and Higgsy (Jordan Higgs) is Higgsy. He’s consistent. Consistently throughout the season, he performs to a level which makes him such a valuable player to us.’

There was also a special mention for Stuart Nelson who’s save in the second half helped to secure the points. Nelson has since been named in the Vanarama National South Team of the Week.

Tyrone Sterling rolled back the years and scored a fantastic header to level the score at one a piece. ‘What a great feeling to get the team back in the game,’ he said. I don’t score many but to hear the crowd erupt after scoring is always so special.’

Josh Ajayi finally opened his account after knocking on the door, well the woodwork actually, in his last few outings. It was a sublime finish from a player who is clearly starting to enjoy life at Crabble. ‘It was a great performance from the boys, not just myself,’ said Ajayi. We dug deep, especially after going behind so early on. I think i’m settling in quite well, it’s a great bunch of lads who haven’t made it hard for me at all.

I think now that I have got my goal it’s a bit of pressure off my back and has given me the extra confidence to keep going and hopefully scoring and helping the team as much as I can. We have shown what we are capable of, whether at training or on game day so we just need to keep building on these positives going forward.’

THE MANAGERS REACTION

Mitch Brundle spoke to Matt Gerrard of BBC Radio Kent post defeat to Worthing.

Worthing are a good side and we are at a stage of development but we could have avoided the goals which is the most frustrating thing. They are a team that’s been together for a long time and it just shows you that’s where the level is. They beat Dartford 3-0. We had our chances today but we cant seem to finish them at the moment. It’s frustrating as we had three in the first half that would change the game but we seem to lack that cutting edge.

You go from a positive performance at Hemel and then you get beat 3-0. Should it have been 3-0? No. Should it have been a red card? No. Should it have been a penalty? Yes. Their goalkeeper has made some great saves. Alfie has had one tipped round the post, they put bodies on the line. Fair play to them they were better than us today. They schooled us today in a way to play football.

In terms of the players going on the transfer list, I need to bring people in and to do that people will have to go. Alfie has been fantastic you know, I thought he was excellent today which is the reaction you are after. Just because you go on the list doesn’t mean that you wont play for me again. We have to make space in the squad but as long as they are willing to work and play the way I want them too. Alfie is a great lad and a great character. Saturday he had a knock so he didn’t make the squad but today he was back in the fold.

I think my right hand side is strong compared to my left at the moment. We need to get that balance right. The left hasn’t offered the same penetration going forward. I think Myles Judd has been excellent tonight as well as Boateng. Our goals didn’t come down that side they came down the left where we was isolated 1 v 1. But look, we need to be more clinical and I will go and work on that now and make sure that we are ready to go.

It’s not the defeat that’s the most painful thing but it’s the consistency and not being able to score goals. We look exciting going forward and I think people can see that but we need the strikers and midfielders to start scoring. Everyone needs to chip in. It’s not a crunching result. It’s something we need to learn from and move on. I might have to put my boots back on. If we are struggling for numbers and it will make the team better than I will have to analyse it from the outside. If I wasn’t the manager would I be playing? We will have to look and see what happens.

THE MANAGERS REACTION

Mitch Brundle’s thoughts on the Tonbridge defeat.

We were just poor. No sugar coating around it. Man to man, eleven v eleven, their eleven was better than ours. We had a couple of players who really gave it a go whereas I don’t believe the others did. I gave them the treatment at half time, like most managers would and they came out for five minutes and were fantastic but we never really gave ourselves a chance to be in the game. In the first half we were 2-0 down before we had even got a foothold in the game, which is disappointing.

We dictated the play for large portions of the match but we just lacked that bit of penetration or the final threaded ball. We lacked the will and the want to actually run past players. Just really disappointed. I stand on the sides like the fans do and it hurts me because I am watching what they are watching and that team doesn’t represent me and that’s what I am most disappointed about.

Up till now the team have performed to a certain standard and I couldn’t really change the starting eleven. They performed against Ebbsfleet, Taunton and Hungerford, where we were undone by a freak goal from the wind. Last night just proves that deep down I know what is needed with this team and this is why there will be new additions. I have inherited this squad and the squads done well up till now but we haven’t really found that consistency. Myself and the chairman are working as hard as we can, day in day out, to try and out to the squad but when we do eventually add to the team that will mean players will have to go out.

For me it’s now time to stamp my authority on the team and as much as I hate losing, at this stage it has probably done me the world of good as now we can change the philosophy and how we want to play, the personnel I want to play, for three games I couldn’t question the lads hunger and desire.

Looking ahead to Hemel Hempstead Town.

We have a fully fit squad to choose from but be prepared for changes to be made, that’s for certain. We beat them 4-0 earlier in the season so they will have something to prove against us. In football I never like to say it but only poor teams bounce back. I want my team to be consistent throughout the season but at the moment I will be asking them to bounce back. There will be additions and changes to the squad, there will be a change to the team and I hope that we can put on a performance that will be as far away as possible of that from Tuesday night. Their manager has come in and done fantastically well, but we will try and implement our game plan and hopefully our new additions will make sure of that.
