A wrongly disallowed goal meant Dover had to a settle for a point in a match that they really should have won. After dealing comfortably with everything Boston could throw at them, the Whites finally put the ball in the back of the net five minutes from time but were denied a deserved winner by a poor decision from the referee. A right-wing corner was weakly punched out by Boston goalkeeper Bastock and was headed into the back of the net by Dover full-back Steve Norman but the goal was inexplicably disallowed by referee Mr. Spicer. There was no question of a foul on the goalkeeper who had no Dover players near him and there did not appear to be any infringement elsewhere. The validity of the goal was confirmed by the match video but by then it was too late and the Whites had lost two vital points.
That piece of controversy was the only real incident of note in a quiet game. Dover just shaded match and had more shots on target. Dover continued with their 5-2-3 formation and dealt comfortably with most of what Boston had to offer although they themselves did not pressure Bastock as much as they would have hoped. A first half Steve Norman header from 15 yards was the closest Dover came to scoring in the first period.
The second half was equally uneventful. Dover had to do without the services of Joff Vansittart who was substituted at half time with a back injury. Matt Carruthers took his place.
Perhaps the most interesting action of the afternoon was the reception received by visiting Rushden manager Brian Talbot who was the subject of much of the second half chanting from both sets of supporters.
