Whites gained their first away win of the season in this
Kent Senior Cup tie in Bromley, after Dean Palmer scored a
fantastic 90th minute winner. It was going to take
something special to part the teams, as an uninspiring game
went the way of the Whites.
Steve Browne put out a similar side to the one that was
unlucky to lose at Hampton, but with Vallance and Rogers
taking the places of Dean Readings and Warren Ryan.
The referee L. Venamore began the game in a bad way, with
the poor booking of Victor Renner after only 8 minutes. Victor
threw the ball over the keeper to where a free kick needed to
be taken from, but the referee decided that he was throwing
the ball away, even though the linesman was signalling that
Victor was right.
This got the game off to a bad start, but Victor almost
replied in the right way minutes after. He saw his shot well
saved by keeper Andy Walker, as the Whites tried to impose
themselves on the game.
But it was not until the 24th minute that the
game really started. The home side created a good chance that
they should have scored, before Whites broke quickly,
resulting in Maynard seeing his shot from 18-yards pushed
around the post.
Another superb passing move by the Whites ended with
Wilkins shooting over, but after 34 minutes Dover took the
lead. Again Bromley went close with a free kick just wide, but
the ball then game down the other end of the park as
Carruthers was released down the right. His cross from the
by-line found Wilkins, who shot first time into the corner of
the net.
Wilkins almost made it 2-0 moments before half time. More
good passing by the Whites set up Braithwaite (who had an
outstanding game), and his cross picked out Wilkins free in
the centre. He did everything right, but the keeper produced
an outstanding one-handed save to deny him.
The interval clearly helped Bromley, as they came out
fighting in the second period. And they did not have to wait
long before they drew level, as Leroy Huggins found himself
free at the near post, headed in.
The referee missing a clear handball by Steve Potterill was
the only noteworthy action before an exciting final ten
minutes, mainly because the referee stopped the flow of the
game with a series of strange decisions for both sides.
With ten minutes to go, with Chris Wright having been
introduced into the fray, Whites almost scored. He turned in
the box, but his shot went inches wide of the far post. The
impressive Gary Drewett almost won it for the home side
minutes later, as he collected the ball in his own box, and
ran the length of the field, but Jean-Zepherin saved his
shot.
A good run by Carruthers set up Wilkins who shot just wide,
and then Wilkins crossed for Wright to head on target before
the goal finally came. Palmer picked up the ball 25-yards out,
and shot into the roof of the net to the joy of those that
travelled to support the Whites.
Thankfully there was little time for Bromley to threaten an
equaliser as the referee blew his whistle minutes afterwards,
and so Whites managed to win a cup game AND an away game all
in one night! It was not the best advert for football, but
this was a promising victory for the Whites, and let's hope
that this gives them confidence for the battle against
relegation.
