Whites gained another vital point towards survival, after
an exciting finale. Whites led until the 83rd
minute, then conceded two goals which looked like leaving them
pointless. However, Dean Palmer equalised in the
90th minute, and Whites almost snatched victory in
injury time.
A virus going around the club led to a couple of changes to
the side. Lee Shearer and Craig Wilkins both came down with
it, with Nick Grime also not included, and so there were
places in the starting line up for Dean Readings and Sam
Vallance. Another new face was included too, with Markus
Sawyer playing a left wing role.
In a fairly even first half, the first chance fell to the
Whites. Paul Armstrong looked dangerous all night, and with
only nine minutes on the clock, collected a flick on by
Renner, but shot wide.
The visitors played the normal Ryman league way, and had
ten men behind the ball for most of the game, but looked
dangerous on the break. Minutes after Armstrong's chance,
Scott Curley almost broke the deadlock, but shot over when
well placed.
The evening could have turned out very differently if
Armstrong had taken his chances, as he again got on the end of
a through ball, but shot over this time. He then spurned a
superb chance with half an hour gone, as he evaded his markers
in the box, but headed over a Carruthers cross, when he should
have done better.
Leyton almost got the vital first goal the minute before
half time. Leji Bajada stayed onside, and was through
one-on-one with Jean-Zepherin. However, a poor touch by the
attacker meant the ball went straight through the keeper, and
Whites went up the other end and took the lead themselves.
Good passing by the Whites meant the ball fell to Maynard,
who produced a superb pass across the pitch to the new guy,
Markus Sawyer. He took the ball on, and lobbed a cross-shot
over the advancing keeper, to the delight of the River
End.
Taking the lead just before half-time was just what was
needed. Going behind meant that Leyton had to push forward
more than they had been, and they subsequently had more of the
second period. This possession wasn't being translated into
real chances though, and Whites almost doubled their lead on
the hour mark.
Braithwaite was fouled on the edge of the area, and Craig
Cloke stepped up to take the free kick. He took it quickly,
but he blasted it inches wide of the upright.
Leyton were threatening though, and substitute Michael
Deane almost made an immediate impact. Within a minute of
coming on, he raced down the left wing, but shot into the side
netting.
Another substitute, George Gregoriou also went close to the
equaliser. He collected the ball centrally, 18-yards out, but
his attempted lob of Jean-Zepherin went wide, as he miss-hit
his shot.
The introduction of Shaun Welford brought a new attacking
dimension, and was a welcome sight for Dover supporters. Shaun
looked a lot slimmer than when he was in the first team
earlier on in the season, and it was good that he was given
his chance after scoring regularly for the reserves.
He almost made an immediate impact too, as he chased a lost
cause down the left touchline, kept the ball in, and crossed
for Armstrong. He took his time, but unfortunately shot
marginally over.
These two again combined well minutes later, and almost put
the game beyond Leyton. Armstrong evaded the offside trap,
sprinted down the left, and unselfishly crossed, as Welford
was free in the centre. However, the ball was just too far in
front of Welford, and he couldn't get on the end of it.
Yet it was the final ten minutes that were the most
exciting of the night, as the heart rates of Dover fans went
sky high! With 83 minutes on the clock, Leyton drew level. A
seemingly innocuous challenge on the edge of the area by Cloke
was adjudged to be a penalty, and Leji Bajada slotted the ball
past Jean-Zepherin.
Just when Whites fans thought it couldn't get any worse,
they found themselves behind. George Gregoriou was left free
down the right, and took the ball inside and scored.
However, despair turned to joy in the final minute of
regulation time. A corner led to a goalmouth scramble, and
Dean Palmer scored with a scrappy overhead kick. Then
Armstrong almost scored the winner after a superb run down the
left wing by Palmer, but unfortunately shot over.
The final chance fell to the Whites, as the roar of the
Dover End lifted the players. Maynard put a corner in from the
right, and Welford got the ball out from underneath his feet
after another scramble, but his shot was deflected onto the
top of the bar.
With this, the referee blew the final whistle. Whites fans
didn’t know how to feel as they left, as victory was clearly
within our grasp with seven minutes to play. However, when we
found ourselves behind at the end of normal time, a point
didn't look to bad, so we must look at it as one point gained,
especially against a side with the best away record in the
league.
It now brings bigger importance to Saturday's game with
Wealdstone though, as we must look to pick up three points.
Fans need to ensure they make it to the game to cheer on the
lads in this vital game, whilst also supporting all the
fundraising schemes that are going on, after the terrible news
of last week.
