For
the second time in a week, Whites only gained a point as
reward for all their dominance, as yet again two vital points
were lost. Whites controlled the majority of the game, but
succumbed to a second half equaliser.
The
side showed two changes from the previous week, with Daniel
Braithwaite and Walid Matata replacing James Rogers and the
suspended Tom Hickman.
Whites
took the game to Leyton from the offset, and the home side
hardly got out of their own half for the first 40 minutes of
the game. The first chance fell to Anthony Hogg, who shot
wide, but the speedy Matata almost broke the deadlock minutes
afterwards.
After
good work by Carruthers, he fed the ball through to Walid, who
took a touch and fired his shot goalwards, but Leyton keeper
James Hasell produced an outstanding save to deny the young
forward.
Not
to be denied, Whites continued to push for the first goal, and
Victor Renner was the next to go close, when he headed Daniel
Braithwaite's cross just wide.
After
a short break whilst Scott Curley was booked for a horrible
elbow on Shane Hamshare, Whites deservedly took the lead. The
ball was put across the box, Renner flicked it on to the back
post, for Carruthers to sweetly volley into the
net.
Whites
went in search of a vital second goal, and after Cloke had
volleyed over, Renner had a superb chance. Stirling crossed from the
left, and it found Renner six-yards out, but he shot first
time and it went wide.
When
Leyton manager/chairman Costa Sophocleous substituted his son
Mark with five minutes of the first half to go, the home side
looked stronger, and had a couple of half chances before the
interval. Firstly substitute Simon Peddie saw his shot loop
over the bar, and then Ian Bass shot over. But the Whites went
in at half time a goal to the good.
The
second period started on a vicious note, with Scott Curley
producing a couple of 'tackles' that deserved punishing, and
he finally got his second booking of the game for an elbow on
Shane Hamshare, minutes after he had elbowed Sam
Vallance.
However,
Leyton looked a better side without him, and three minutes
after going down to ten men, the home side drew level. A
debatable corner was given but when it was swung across, Leji
Bajada was left unmarked to head past Paul
Hyde.
Even
though the home side was looking dangerous on the break,
Whites continued to press for the winner, and Carruthers
almost set up Matata soon after the hour mark. But they were
denied by James Hasell in the Leyton goal, who continued to
deny the Whites whenever they crossed the ball into the
box.
There
were shouts for a penalty when James Hawes looked to handle in
the area, but the Whites should have scored moments
afterwards. A great cross by Braithwaite found Carruthers
storming in on goal, but he took a touch and instead of
placing the shot decided to blast it, and it went over.
Dean
Readings was forced to produce an impressive block to deny
Manny Williams, as the home side tried to snatch an undeserved
victory, but the replacement of Matata for Wright almost had
the same effect down the other end.
Wright
turned his marker down the right touchline, and then cutback
to Carruthers, but he could not collect the ball properly, and
another chance went begging.
Injury
time could have produced a winner for either side, as
Readings was forced to clear
off of the line, and then Renner headed a Carruthers cross
over the bar, but it ended a draw.
This
was certainly a game that the Whites deserved to win, but it
didn't turn out that way. If we had been able to convert some
of the first half chances, then we could have been out of
sight, but we must continue to support the side and hope they
can get themselves out of the relegation zone in the final
eight games.
