The Whites' great
escape gathered pace at the Hoverspeed Stadium against Windsor
and Eton, as a second half Matt Carruthers goal settled the
game in Dover's favour. This was not a pretty game by any
stretch of the imagination, especially as it was played on a
badly cut up pitch, but the important thing was the three
points.
Clive Walker made
only one change for his league return to the Hoverspeed
Stadium, with Victor Renner replacing James Rogers. Other than
this it was the same side that had defeated Staines the
previous Saturday.
On the poor
playing surface, it took a while for the sides to get into the
game. The first real chance fell to the visitors through Paul
Cook. He collected a hopeful ball forward, and attempted a
lob, but mis-hit his shot straight into the hands of Paul
Hyde.
An injury to
Victor Renner after only 17 minutes meant an early
substitution, with Chris Wright replacing him. And he almost
had an immediate effect, as minutes after his introduction he
held off two defenders on the edge of the area, and laid the
ball off to Paul Armstrong. He had lots of time to pick his
spot, but managed to drag his shot just
wide.
Windsor forward
Symon James went close for the visitors midway through the
half. He was allowed to turn and shoot on the edge of the box,
but fortunately his shot went just over the
bar.
Whites were
looking the more dangerous side, though not creating many
clear-cut chances. However, they went close when Armstrong
chased a lost cause down the right touchline, and crossed for
Wright. But he took a touch and got tackled, though some in
the crowd felt that he was unfairly brought to ground.
The final chance
of the half fell to Matt Carruthers. He collected the ball
after it had been cleared to the edge of the area, but shot
over, leaving the scores level at the interval.
Whites started the
second half slowly, and Windsor looked the more likely
scorers. Peter Holsgrove tested Hyde with a well-taken free
kick, and then minutes later, Hyde was forced to save a
stooping header from Justin Skinner following a
corner.
But just after the
hour mark, with Whites' first chance of the second period, the
crucial first goal arrived. A deep Maynard free kick was put
back into the six-yard box by Armstrong, leaving Matt
Carruthers to strike home from 2-yards. The Whites fans went
delirious on the River End, whilst the players celebrated in
the back of the net.
Windsor made
substitutions, but it was the Whites who went closest to
scoring, as Armstrong hit a long throw by Maynard just wide.
The final ten minutes were a nerve-wracking time for home
fans, especially when Sam Vallance was forced to make a
last-ditch tackle with Symon James through on goal.
Deep into injury
time, Whites were given another scare, as a mistake by
substitute Jude Sterling let Symon James in again, but Hyde
made a good save to deny him.
This proved to be the final chance of the game, and a huge
roar and chants of 'we're staying up' came with the sounding
of the final whistle. This was a hard-fought victory, but
again luck was on our side at times. We have a long way to go
before staying up, but we must still keep the faith and
continue to support in numbers and as vocally as we did
today.
